Can You Hear the Nightbird Call? by Anita Rau Badami (2006)

Anita Rau Badami does a wonderful job of taking a complicated political chaos and turning it into a highly readable and heartwrenching acccount of three women connected by bonds of family and tragedy. She follows Bibi-ji, Leela and Nimmo through the partition of India and Pakistan in 1947 to the explosion of Air India flight 182 off the coast of Ireland in 1985. As we get to know these woman, we laugh with them, and cry with them... and understand their world a little bit better.

I really enjoyed this book - it opened my eyes to a people and nation that I understood very little about. Recommended!
