The Recital by Robert Elmer

Another church library book....

The Recital is a sequel to Elmer's The Duet, and follows Gerrit Appledorn and Joan Horton as they marry, leave Gerrit's safe farming community of VanDalen and make a new life together in the bustle of Chicago.  This book was charming - and I found it a refreshing change to follow the love story of an elderly couple learning to create a home, make compromises and provide support to one another.

Those of Dutch Calvinist background will relate to Gerrit's church community, close community, cultural shelter-ness, and love of olliebollen, home-cooking and salted licorice.

A sweet love story told with faith, hope and courage.  Recommmended.
